Homes

The homes in Carthay Circle come in many different sizes and architectural styles. Most of the houses were built from the late 1920s thru the 1940s. The unusual layout of streets in Carthay, designed to feature the classic old theater and adjust to San Vicente Blvd, diagonally slashing through the community, means many of the home lots come in varied shapes.

Inter-mixed with the majority of single family homes in Carthay, you’ll discover quite a few classic duplexes, a street featuring beautiful old chateau-style L.A. apartments and three handsome office buildings where the theater used to be. Everywhere you look in Carthay Circle it’s one of a kind – there’s no other neighborhood in L.A. quite like it.

Carthay Circle Elementary School

Carthay Circle Elementary School, which opened in 1924 on Olympic Blvd, was a complementary structure to the Carthay Circle Theater on San Vicente. Today the lovely old building, beautifully refurbished, stands as a reminder of the past, but more importantly serves the future as an Environmental Studies Magnet School. Learn More

Parks

Carthay Circle’s west boundary abuts La Cienega Park. Okay, so we know this is part of Beverly Hills, but it’s a short walk for our residents to enjoy the sand-filled playground for the tots and the baseball/soccer fields for kids of all ages. Carthay youngsters are eligible to play in Beverly Hills Little League and Ayso Soccer. Miner’s Park, with the iconic statue of the early California miner panning for gold, is on San Vicente directly across from where the old theater stood. Recently re-landscaped, it’s a great place to sit and read the paper or simply walk the dog.

History

Carthay Circle was conceived and built around the Carthay Circle Theater complex. In 1968, developers with the approval of the Los Angeles City Council, demolished the grand old landmark to construct new office buildings. That rallied the neighborhood to protect and preserve the special character of the area to this day. To see what the old theater was like visit Disney;s California Center in Anaheim.,
